Ted Barker is a Professor in Development and Psychopathology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London. He examines links between adversity, trauma, mental health criminal behaviours and violence. He also examines the role of biology (i.e., epigenetics, genetics and brain imaging) and social influences in the link between adversity and mental health, with a keen eye towards ‘what works’ and ‘for who’ in relation to natural experiments and psychosocial interventions. He has published over 150 journal articles based on research in the UK, Western Europe, Canada, the USA, Brazil and South Africa. He has editorial responsibilities in four international journals. His research has been funded by the ESRC, MRC, NICHD, British Academy, Leverhulme and the FCDO. Ted is Co-PI, with Shiraz Maher, on the Cross-Border Conflict, Evidence, Policy and Trends (XCEPT) programme, which is an interdisciplinary FCDO-funded project that focuses on drivers of violent and peaceful behaviour in three countries. As part of XCEPT, Ted established longitudinal cohorts in Iraq, Syria and South Sudan and fielding the Impact of Trauma Survey, examining trauma, mental health, radicalisation and violent extremism.
