Countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia

This research assessed the extent to which natural resource management (NRM) and climate adaptation interventions under the EU Trust Fund for Africa’s (EUTF) ‘Collaboration in Cross-Border Areas of the Horn of Region’ programme contributed to gender-sensitive conflict prevention and mitigation in two cross-border areas. The research examined two specific EUTF projects, which targeted two different cross-border areas in the Horn of Africa region. The first was ‘Building Opportunities for Resilience in the Horn of Africa’ (BORESHA), a project in the Mandera Triangle (the tri-border border area between Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia) which was completed in 2021. The second was Selam Ekisil II (SEEK II), an ongoing project being implemented in two selected areas of the Kenya-Ethiopia border specifically aimed at addressing conflict through better and more cooperative NRM.

The research adopted qualitative research methods including a review of existing literature, Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The use of different data collection methods enabled the triangulation of multiple sources of data. The analysis identified knowledge gaps and areas for improvement in current and future environmental peacebuilding, NRM, and climate change adaptation policy and programming.
