Duration: January 2026 – December 2026

Countries: Somalia, Kenya, Thailand, Myanmar

Since the end of the Cold War, Sanctions have become increasingly targeted, but little is known about how nonstate actors evade them or how this reshapes conflict economies. The Centre on Armed Groups will study how borderland conflict actors in Myanmar and Somalia adapt to sanctions, and the effects on local communities. Using comparative case studies and network analysis, the project will generate evidence to inform more effective sanctions design and conflict prevention policy.
